Central Bucks based organizations earlier this month teamed up for take on food insecurity in a spring collection drive.

On May 3, the Warrington Township Lions Club and Giant Supermarket of Warminster joined forces with the Warminster Food Bank for a spring food collection drive. Giant customers and members of the community donated over 1600 pounds of nonperishable food items and $500 in cash and Giant gift cards.

The items collected will help to provide monthly groceries and supplies for local families in need. The Warminster Food Bank serves over 12,000 people a year in Bucks and Montgomery Counties. This food drive was especially important since donations drop off during the spring and summer months, a spokesperson said.

In addition, schools will be closing for the summer in a few weeks and that means the end of school lunches for students.  For families dealing with food insecurity, school lunches help to stretch their food budgets and when school is not in session, many families are faced with having to make difficult choices between food and other necessities.  Items collected at this event will help to bridge the gap for these families.

Bill Steinke, President-Elect, Warrington Township Lions Club, said, “The Warrington Lions Club extends a heartfelt thank you to everyone in the community who contributed to the May 3rd food drive. Your generosity and compassion will directly help local families facing food insecurity. This event was a wonderful example of what can be accomplished through the productive partnership between the dedicated volunteers of the Warminster Food Bank and the members of the Warrington Lions Club. Together, we are strengthening our community through service, kindness, and collaboration.

“Sadly, people experience food insecurity at all times of the year,” said Mike Cerino, Director, Warminster Food Bank.  “It was great to be able to work with the Warrington Township Lions Club and Giant supermarket to help our neighbors in need. We are grateful to them and to the people in the community for their generosity.”
