Following multiple vehicle crashes and near misses, Falls Twp Supervisors approved new Thornridge Drive stop signs Monday at the intersection of Teaberry Lane to help reduce neighborhood driving speeds.
The board previously authorized advertisement for the local code amendment during its September meeting before finalizing the measure this week.
The new stop sign measure is part of a broader effort to improve roadway safety and curb excessive speeds in the neighborhood. In July, supervisors approved curb extensions and bump-outs at the intersections of Thornridge Drive and Tanglewood Avenue, as well as Thornridge Drive and Twin Leaf Lane. Those locations will also feature reflectorized raised delineator posts.
The series of safety measures follows a comprehensive speed and traffic study recently conducted by Derrick Kennedy of Remington & Vernick Engineers.
Additionally, town officials confirmed that an existing speed feedback sign on Thornridge Drive will remain in operation, and a second speed feedback sign will be installed for southbound traffic to encourage drivers to slow down.
Kennedy gathered more than 7,000 data points along the 25 mph corridor. While the study captured one motorist traveling at 55 mph and a second highest speed of 35 mph, Kennedy noted that the overwhelming majority of drivers were complying with the posted speed limit.
“The large majority of the speed is compliant.”
