Bensalem Township launched their Automated Red-Light Enforcement Program last month at the intersections of Street Road at Knights Road and Route 1 at Old Lincoln Highway.
On April 1, 2024, Bensalem Police launched the program with a 60-day warning period. During the month of April, over 5,200 warnings were issued to vehicle owners for red light violations. The high number of violations underscores the necessity of enforcement to ensure the safety of all drivers in our township, said Bensalem Police.
The 60-day grace period concludes on Friday, May 31, 2024.
Starting June 1, 2024 , any vehicle owner failing to stop for a red light at these locations will face a fine of $100. Bensalem Township does not receive revenue from this program, and there is no cost to the community for installing, operating, or maintaining the system, said authorities. Violators will fund all equipment and personnel costs directly related to the program.
Drivers are reminded by the police that a steady yellow signal means that they should slow down and be prepared to stop as the red-light activation is imminent. Too often, drivers speed up on a yellow light to “beat” the red light or exit the turn lane and “cut the corner” to complete a left turn before the light turns red. Police said, these actions create dangerous driving conditions for other vehicles and pedestrians and will result in a $100 fine.
A violation occurs when the front of the vehicle is behind the white stop line on the roadway when the traffic signal turns red, and the vehicle continues through the intersection despite the red signal (see attached video), according to authorities.
