State officials are warning the public of a new scam targeting Social Security beneficiaries.
Residents of Pennsylvania may qualify for a program to cover funeral expenses up to $35,000, according to a mailer titled “2024 Benefit Information for Pennsylvania Citizens Only,” reads the letter.
You should be aware that this is a scam.
In the mailer, authorities warn of four things:
- The mailer is titled “2024 Benefit Information for Pennsylvanians Only.”
- There is a promise to pay up to $35,000 in funeral expenses.
- Pennsylvania residents are falsely told that this payment is tax-free.
- You are urged to return the postage-paid card within five days according to the mailer.
Officials advise what to do if you received the mailer:
- Do not respond to this mailer or provide any personal information.
- Report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and local authorities.
- Share this information with friends, family, and neighbors, especially those who might be more vulnerable to these types of scams.
