Bristol Borough Police have charged a local man with felony assault of an officer, and related offenses stemming from a Christmas day incident in which he bit an officer “several times.”

Juan Hernandez, 33, of the 600 block of Spruce Street is now in custody with bail set at 10 percent of $1.5 million dollars for his attack on officers in which he had to be tased, police say.

According to court documents, Borough Police were called to the Spruce St.residence shortly after 1 am Wednesday for a report of a domestic incident.

Upon arrival, Police made contact with Hernandez finding him drunk in his bedroom, refusing to let officers into a bedroom and was “unruly” with a second responding officer, court records show.

For officer safety, police said, they attempted to place the suspect in handcuffs and the drunk man became “combative” with police subsequently advising him they were placing him under arrest. A struggle ensued, with police alleging Hernandez bit one officer “several times” and was “grabbing for his gun.” The second responding officer tased the man to subdue him, police wrote in court records, as he continued to resist arrest.

The original complainant told police Hernandez poured alcohol all over a bedroom and attempted to light it on fire, according to the probable cause affidavit.

The officer bitten went to a local medical facility for treatment of his injuries.

Police say the “extremely intoxicated” man continued his hostilities even after he was taken into custody, as he spit on the doors and windows of the police vehicle, authorities said.

Hernandez is scheduled to appear in Bristol Borough District Court on January 8, charged with felony assault of a police officer; misdemeanor counts for resisting arrest, simple assault, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct.

The status of the officers injuries are unknown at press time.

Police Chief Steve Henry, in response to a media request for the suspects mug shot said, “Due to the continuing violent behavior of the subject while he was in our custody, he could not be processed prior to being transported to Bucks County Prison. Therefore we do not have the mugshot at this time.”
