Health Department to Spray Adult Mosquitoes in Bensalem, Bristol and Falls Townships

The Bucks County Department of Health (BCDH) Mosquito Disease Control Program will conduct an ultra-low volume (ULV) mosquito control operation on Thursday August 21, beginning at 7:45PM in Bensalem Township, Bristol Township, and Falls Township to reduce high populations of nuisance mosquitoes and mosquitoes capable of transmitting West Nile Virus.

The treatment will be administered via truck-mounted equipment, spraying mosquito habitats in residential and park locations. Trucks used in the spray are identified with Bucks County seal logos located on the doors. The equipment dispenses Duet at a rate of 0.75 ounces per acre. This product is designed to provide quick, effective control of adult mosquito populations. These application materials have a very low toxicity profile to mammals and will have negligible impact to non-target insects and the environment.

Treatments will occur in Bensalem Township at the Bensalem Country Club bound by Atlantic Avenue, Brown Avenue, and Hulmeville Road.

Treatments will occur in Bristol Township within Magnolia Hill and a portion of Birch Valley which are bound by Magnolia Drive, Begonia Lane, and Boulder Lane.

Treatments will occur in Falls Township within Birch Valley which is bound by Birch Drive, Penn Valley Road, and Buttonwood Lane. In addition, areas bound by Trenton Road, Auburn Road, Stanwood Road, Fairfield Road, South Olds Boulevard, Chatham Road, and South Queen Anne Drive will be treated.

Certain mosquito species carry the West Nile Virus, which can cause humans to contract West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, all residents in areas where virus activity has been identified are at risk of contracting West Nile encephalitis.

Weather conditions and other unexpected events could delay or cancel this spray operation. If conditions do not allow application on August 21, subsequently Friday evening, August 22, will serve as the back-up spray date.

You can help protect yourself and your community from West Nile Virus by getting rid of standing water around your home. Mosquitoes can breed in even small amounts of water that could be found in items including flowerpots, buckets, toys and clogged gutters. Using bug spray and wearing long sleeves, especially around dawn and dusk, can also help keep bites away.

GIANT and MARTIN’S pharmacists advise that any prescription medication should always be packed in one’s carry-on bag, never in checked luggage, and preferably in the original container with the prescription label affixed. Be sure to bring enough for your trip as well as extra should there be any travel delays.

Travelers are also encouraged to pack a small first aid kit for on-the-go use. This should include bandages of various sizes, gauze pads, antibiotic ointment, hydrocortisone cream, tweezers and a thermometer. Be sure to add over the counter pain relievers, antacids, decongestants, hand sanitizers and antibacterial wipes, too. Additional items may be needed based on one’s destination and weather.

Still Winter: NWS Issues Tuesday Morning Winter Weather Advisory

March “comes in as lion” to the Lower Bucks area as the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a winter weather advisory for Tuesday morning forecasting a mixed precipitation event making for possibly slippery road conditions.

The advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. until 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 3.

NWS says total snow accumulations less than one inch and ice accumulations around a light glaze in portions of southeast Pennsylvania and central, northern, and northwest New Jersey.

The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday morning commute, officials say, and motorists should plan on slippery road conditions. Motorists are reminded to slow down and use caution while traveling.

Bucks Issues “Code Blue” Until March 3rd Due to Forecasted Bitter Cold

Bucks County has issued a “Code Blue” declaration as bitter cold is set to return for the start of March.

Shelters in Upper, Central and Lower Bucks will be in operation nightly Sunday through Tuesday morning.

The Upper and Lower Bucks shelters will open at 8:30 p.m. The Central Bucks shelter opens at 7:30 p.m.

The county issues a “Code Blue” declaration when temperatures are forecast to drop below 20 degrees for two or more consecutive days. A “Code Blue” may be called amid higher temperatures, as consideration is also given to wind chill, precipitation and other circumstances.
