A popular Fairless Hills gym branded by its “No Judgement Zone” is closing its doors at the end of October and is transferring memberships to its Bensalem location, leading to censorious commentary by members.
Crunch Fitness members were greeted by a posted notice at its 100 Commerce Boulevard announcing the gym is closing that location and transferring memberships to its 1336 Bristol Pike location in Bensalem which depending on time of day, could be up to a 30 minute drive.
The closing, according to the posted notice, goes into effect on October 30, and does not provide reason(s) for the abrupt closing.
The Elmsford, NY based company has closed locations in Florida, New York, as well as other sites. According to the company website, Crunch Fitness operates over 400 locations nationwide.
Last April, Crunch Holdings, LLC announced a strategic investment from Leonard Green & Partners (“LGP”), a leading private equity investment firm.
LGP is a leading private equity investment firm founded in 1989 and based in Los Angeles, with over $70 billion of assets under management.
“This is an exciting new chapter for Crunch,” said Jim Rowley, Chief Executive Officer of Crunch Fitness.
“Leonard Green & Partners has a phenomenal track record of success and investing in consumer brands, and we’re confident their strategic insight and operational expertise will only continue to accelerate our growth while staying true to our core values.”
The company and its officials, since the LGP take over, has said little about fitness center closings.
Crunch has also been buying out select regional and independent franchisees.
“Crunch is best known for our colorful personality and kickass group fitness and training programs that are #OnlyAtCrunch.”
According to discussions on Reddit, users expressed a consensus of caution regarding private equity ownership and potential changes or rate adjustments.
