Bridge Over Neshaminy Creek to Open 15 Months Ahead of Schedule, PennDOT Says

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced construction has been completed ahead of schedule on a $12.1 million project to replace the Brownsville Road bridge over Neshaminy Creek with it reopening Thursday morning.

“Initially, the timeline for replacing this bridge was set at 34 months. Thanks to the collaboration between state and local officials and the team at Loftus Construction, we reduced the project timeline by 15 months by implementing a detour and temporarily closing the bridge. This truly exemplifies the power of teamwork.” says District 6 Executive Din Abazi.

Under this project, PennDOT’s contractor replaced the existing 68-year-old concrete box beam bridge. The new bridge, measuring 278 feet long and 41 feet wide, is approximately 24 feet longer and 10 feet wider than the former structure.

In addition, the vertical alignment was raised over Neshaminy Creek to provide an adequate waterway opening and to slightly improve the existing sight distance on both approaches to the bridge. In addition, the new structure’s design allows for one less pier than the existing structure to improve the flow under the bridge.

Other construction included widening shoulders to improve the intersection sight distance, improving stormwater management, resurfacing the approach roadway, and installing partially grouted riprap for scour protection at the piers and abutments.

Loftus Construction, Inc. of King of Prussia, PA is the general contractor on this project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds.
