State Rep. Tina Davis, (D-Bucks,) plans to introduce legislation that would require health insurers in the state to provide at least $1,000 toward cranial prostheses or wigs for patients suffering from medical hair loss.
For the millions of Americans experiencing hair loss due to medical conditions such as alopecia and lupus, or because of cancer treatment, the negative impacts can extend far beyond physical changes, Davis said. Hair loss can profoundly affect self-image and confidence, contribute to anxiety and depression, and make it more difficult for people to feel fully engaged in their everyday lives.
“Unfortunately, wigs made with human hair can cost over $3,000, making them difficult to afford for many people,” Davis said. “This is why I, along with Senator Steve Santarsiero, will be introducing legislation that would require insurers to provide at least $1,000 toward cranial prosthesis, or wigs.”
“It is our hope that by making wigs more affordable, those struggling with hair loss will be able to find a wig that brings them confidence and makes day-to-day life more manageable,” she said.
Davis is currently circulating a co-sponsorship memorandum to gather support among House colleagues before formally introducing the bill.
