Bristol Township is looking into the possibilities of replacing the Randall Avenue Bridge entirely and constructing a new bridge crossing over the rail lines in the Edgely section of the township.
At last week’s Council meeting, officials discussed studying how federal funding could support constructing a new bridge extending Haines Road over the Amtrak Northeast Corridor line, connecting it with Radcliffe Street.
Township Manager Randee Mazur said the township is working with a structural engineering firm to determine if the idea is practical.
Days after the reopening of the Randall Ave Bridge, Lower Bucks Source asked Mazur what was next now that the span was opened.
“A Haines Road Bridge” she said.
The township has been looking into the possibility of replacing the Randall Ave Bridge, going to so far as having it listed on the federal Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).
The township said, it is now looking into whether those funds should be used towards the construction of a new bridge across Haines Road. The proposal is what the township is more in favor of and hoping that it works, Mazur said.
The federal funding covers only one bridge project, she said. If a new bridge were to be constructed, the Randall Ave Bridge would be demolished.
The new bridge concept would be commercial friendly without a truck weight restriction, a four-lane cross-section capable of handling heavier traffic. Township officials say they think a new Haines Street crossing could alter traffic patterns in the Edgely section by decreasing it in the residential area and pointing it towards Tullytown Borough.
The idea remains still in the infancy stages, and studying the workability of the project will take considerable time, officials said.
