LMT Cancels Community Day, Smaller Events Eyed in Wake of COVID-19 Concerns
Lower Makefield Township Cancels Unity Day amid pandemic concerns with an eye on smaller scaled events for later this summer.
The Lower Makefield Township Community Day 2020, originally scheduled for August has been cancelled in its entirety due to the COVID-19 virus, township officials announced Monday evening.
“We simply cannot offer any version of the event that people have come to expect. Community Day takes a considerable amount of planning and attracts a large crowd of 4,000-6,000 people each year. We have reviewed several different scenarios, but none would meet the expectations we have set for several years”, Director of Parks and Recreation Monica Tierney said.
The news wasn’t all bad, Tierney said, as the township is in the midst of planning a myriad of smaller events throughout the summer such as car shows and drive-in movies which have been reviewed with county health officials.
“We look forward to the many smaller events they have planned and the opportunity to partner with new groups and organizations as we prepare a new summer schedule,” said Tierney.
While it is disappointing that we will be cancelling Community Day, it has been great to watch township staff come up with new and creative ways to operate in this COVID environment.
Additional ideas also being considered are a small vendor fair for the end of August focusing small businesses facing hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a possible drive-in concert was mentioned and a haunted trail event for the fall, officials said.
As long as we remain in the green phase we will continue to offer what we can to the public. We will keep a close eye on the COVID -19 situation as we consider the remainder of our event season. We look forward to the many smaller events they have planned and the opportunity to partner with new groups and organizations as we prepare a new summer schedule, said Tierney.
