Last weekend dozens. including local officials came out to support a fundraiser for a fallen Bristol Borough firefighter killed in a hit and run in June.
The event in the name of Daniel Santiago sought to raise reward money and pay for funereal related cost and perhaps bring some changes to Rt 13 traffic lights from Bath Road to Green Lane.
Over $2000.00 was raised through the selling of hot dogs said Hermie Rivera, who thanked the community for the outpouring of support for the effort
Members of the Santiago family attended the fundraiser held at the Bristol Elks Lodge 970 on Wood Street also.
Two of Daniel’s brothers, Edwin and Eric expressed their grief and frustration with the lack of movement by investigators.
In tears, Edwin said, if there were cameras on the lights maybe we and the police would have something. But so far, he said, we’ve heard nothing.
To that end, Bucks County Commissioner Bob Harvie said with help from State Rep’s John Galloway and Tina Davis he is looking into possible ways to have camera’s added to traffic signals in Bristol.
“Bristol is like family to me and this has been a tragedy, he said, “myself Rep’s Galloway and Davis have been in discussions with Penn DOT to see if there is any grant money available to see if we can do something about this section of Rt. 13 where to many people have become victims.
Harvie said, one option to help police with investigations like the one into Daniel’s killing is to have cameras installed on the traffic lights.
“We are working with the police departments too looking at crash data to see if there are any other efforts or changes that can be made, so tragedies like that of Santiago family won’t happen again. Its a work in progress though” he said.
To this date there are no known suspects in the hit and run, and as Rivera pointed out, we’re right now relying on the person who hit Danny having a conscious and coming forward.
Harvie, Galloway and on behalf of the Bristol Borough Police Benevolent Association, President Joe Moors made donations to the effort.
