Sinkhole Closes Section of Pond Street in Bristol, Repairs Thursday and Friday

Locals woke up to discover an unwelcomed sight in Bristol Borough Wednesday.

A sinkhole of undetermined size developed in the 500 block of Pond Street between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

Bristol Borough Fire Police announced the closing of the well traveled roadway late Tuesday night.

“Pond St is closed from Penn to Beaver St’s,” officials said.

Borough Manager James Dillon said cause of the sinkhole had yet to be determined as of Thursday morning.

Dillon said repairs are being performed today and possibly Friday.

“We Want to have it fixed certainly by when school opens next week,” Dillon said.  .

The sinkhole is yards away from where a home was condemned last year due to flooding on Pond St.

In recent weeks there have been a number of street/road way projects started or in process. 

Beginning September 12 Bath Street will be closed for several months for utility construction, officials said.

As a main arterial Pond Street traffic will definitely increase with the opening of Bristol schools next week. Snyder-Girotti Elementary School is about two blocks from where the sinkhole is.

“We Want to have it fixed certainly by when school opens next week,” Dillon said.
