Woman Who Threatened Officer With Handgun Taken into Custody in Trenton, N.J.

Updated: 10:30 a.m. Monday July 1

Falls Twp Police said Monday morning Karen Stevens-Nunez, wanted by Falls Police for aggravated assault, and related offenses, was taken into custody by police in Trenton, New Jersey.

Falls Township Police issued an arrest warrant for a woman who threatened a police officer and led him on a high speed chase Saturday, Lt Chris Clark said Sunday.

According to the arrest warrant filed  on Saturday afternoon, a passing motorist flagged down a Falls Township officer asking for a wellness check on a person in the Fairless Hills Self Storage parking lot on South Oxford Valley Road.  The officer positioned his fully marked patrol vehicle behind a blue Mitsubishi hatch back displaying no registration. The subject, Karen Stevens-Nunez, was sitting outside by the opened front driver’s side door.

Clark said anyone encountering the suspect should call 911, anyone with information on the suspect or incident is asked to contact the assigned investigator, Detective Ronald MacPherson, at (215) 302-3347, or via email at r.macpherson@fallstwppd.com. Information may also be provided anonymously at (215) 949-9120, or via email at tiplines@fallstwppd.com.

Nunez then stood up and reached into the front driver’s compartment pulled out a black semi-automatic handgun, turned to face the officer and pointed the gun towards him. In fear for his safety, he put his vehicle in drive and went around Nunez and her vehicle on the passenger side. The officer created distance and gave orders over his vehicle’s loud speaker for her to drop the weapon, according to the probable cause.

Nunez got into her vehicle and fled. The officer activated his vehicle’s overhead lights and siren and got behind her vehicle. She failed to stop, made a right out of the shopping center and proceeded north on South Oxford Valley Road. The officer continued to pursue the vehicle while she was yelling out the window to him. She was fumbling her hands and the officer observed her display the firearm in a cardboard box. The pursuit continued onto Trenton Road when she made a right turn and began heading east. At this time, she accelerated at a high rate of speed in a 35 mile per hour zone. During this time, there were other vehicles on the roadway. The officer hit speeds up to approximately 89 miles per hour and lost sight of the vehicle around the intersection to South Olds Boulevard, said in the criminal complaint.

Nunez, according to the criminal complaint, is homeless.

When taken into custody by police she will be charged by warrant with aggravated assault,  fleeing, simple assault and driving summary offense according to online court records.
