Bridge Dedication Ceremony for Lower Southampton Navy Ensign Sarah Mitchell on Monday

State Senator Frank Farry and state Representative Joe Hogan will be hosting a bridge dedication ceremony on Monday honoring late Navy Ensign Sarah Mitchell on Route 213 (Maple Ave) over the Neshaminy Creek in Lower Southampton Township.

An invitation to the community and information on the road closure was posted on Meta by the Middletown Township Police Department Saturday. The ceremony will be held on Monday at 11 a.m.

Farry and Hogan in a message to the community said.

“We would love to have community members join us and the family and friends of Sarah for this special ceremony.”

Please enter via Route 213 (Maple Ave.) from Middletown Township side of the bridge as the road will be closed at 10:15 a.m. and will reopen after the ceremony. Parking is available in Playwicki Park and a shuttle to the ceremony will be available.

A little bit about Sarah’s life that was cut too short:

Mitchell, a lifelong resident of Lower Southampton Township, tragically lost her life during a training exercise while serving as an ensign in the U.S. Navy in Jordan at the age of 23 on July 8, 2018. She was born in Meadowbrook to John and Betsy McClay Mitchell. She was a proud 2013 graduate of Neshaminy High School, where she excelled at field hockey, basketball, and track & field.

Mitchell graduated in 2017 from Virginia Tech and the Corps of Cadets having earned her degree in biochemistry (minor chemistry and leadership studies).

She served as platoon commander for Virginia Tech’s Naval ROTC. Her determination and loyalty secured her commission in May of 2017 and reported to the guided-missile destroyer USS Jason Dunham in June that same year. The destroyer was deployed to the Middle East from its home port of NAS Norfolk, Virginia.

Mitchell made the ultimate sacrifice while serving her country and will be remembered with the utmost respect and in immeasurable distinction the lawmakers said.
