PennDOT Teams Up with PSP, SEPTA, PPD, and AAA to Encourage Safe Driving Ahead of Super Bowl Sunday

PennDOT, Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), SEPTA, Philadelphia Police Department (PPD), and AAA Mid-Atlantic hosted an event this week at Chickie’s & Pete’s in South Philadelphia. The event aimed to remind football fans to plan for a designated driver when heading out to Super Bowl parties, ensuring a safe ride home at the night’s end.

During the event, police addressed the increased implementation of roving patrols on Super Bowl Sunday aimed at identifying impaired drivers who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Participants also shared tips for hosting Super Bowl parties, including suggestions for non-alcoholic drink options to help prevent partygoers from drinking and driving.

Alcohol is not the only substance that can impair driving; illegal prescription and over-the-counter medications can also lead to impairment. Additionally, combining medications with alcohol can amplify alcohol’s effects, resulting in even more significant impairment.

“The Super Bowl is a significant night for our community to come together in celebration, but we need responsible drivers on the roads,” said PennDOT District 6 Executive Din Abazi. “If you plan to be away from home during the Super Bowl, make a game plan to ensure you have a designated driver if needed. If you’re hosting a party, take care of your designated drivers. Remember: Fans don’t let fans drive drunk.”

Only one team wins the Super Bowl, but if you drive impaired, you lose. Everyone should know by now that it is illegal to drive impaired. According to PennDOT data, in 2024, 51 crashes resulted in one fatality in the Philadelphia region on Super Bowl Sunday. Of those, six were impaired-driving related.

“It’s a good bet that when you’re out cheering for the Eagles this Sunday, whether it’s in South Philly, Swarthmore, Media, Manayunk, or Center City, SEPTA has a safe way home for you and your loved ones,” said SEPTA Interim General Manager Scott Sauer. “We want everyone to have a great experience and celebrate responsibly–and an easy way to do that is by using public transportation.”

Whether you are attending a party or going to a bar or restaurant, make a game plan and follow these simple tips for a safe and happy evening:

  • Always remember that drinking and driving is never acceptable. Even if you’ve only had one alcoholic drink, make sure to designate a sober driver or plan to use SEPTA, a rideshare service, a taxi, or call a sober friend to ensure you get home safely.
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, call 911.
  • If you have a friend who is about to drink and drive, take the keys away and arrange a safe way for them to get home.

Preparation is the best game plan. AAA Mid-Atlantic advises party planners and football fans to prepare by designating a sober driver or arranging alternate transportation options before the party starts.
