Bristol Borough Recreation in its effort to offer an increasing number of events and activities to youngsters in the area announced earlier this week it plans to hold its first annual “Fishing Derby” at the Bristol Lagoon on Jefferson Avenue.
Recreation officials said Friday there are details still to be worked out but the current plan is to hold the event in April.
The borough made a commitment to invest and pour new energy into a myriad of recreation-based efforts including its most popular effort, flag football, officials said.
One of the first offerings coming through the recreation effort was to stock the Bristol Lagoon which took place about two years ago. Now with two years of growth and a fishing throwback policy in place Recreation Board leader Aaron Antonelli said bringing new events to the board’s repertoire of offerings is always the focus of the board.
The fishing derby will offer first, second, and third place prizes, officials said.
Fishing derbies are competitions where participants fish for the biggest catch within a set time limit. The winner is the angler or team with the heaviest fish.
How it works:
-Competitors fish within a set time limit
-Fish are weighed or measured, depending on the rules of the derby
-The total weight or length of the fish is used to determine the winner
-Prizes are awarded to the top finishers
Antonelli reemphasized that details remain to be worked out. These details include whether or not there will be entry fees, if young anglers outside the borough can participate, and what the prize offerings will be.
We have an outstanding collection of volunteers on the board. In addition, we have the support of individual volunteers and council liaisons who work with us on bringing these events to area families. I’m sure we’ll get the last details figured out in the coming days, Antonelli said.
The Bristol Borough Police Benevolent Association (BBPBA) also holds its yearly Brian Adams Fishing with a Cop event honoring the memory and contributions the former business owner made before his passing, at the Lagoon yearly.
