Traffic Stop in Bensalem leads to Foot Pursuit, Arrest of Alleged Drug Dealers

The reported  heavy police presence last week  which  included detectives engaged in a grid search on both sides of 1-95 and along Bristol Pike and the under/overpass of Street Road led to the arrest of two men, one from Bristol and a Pennsylvania State Trooper treated for a minor injury Bensalem authorities said last week

Lower Bucks Source led the early coverage when tipsters, beginning around 3:45 p.m., reported a heavy police presence at the well traveled intersection with detectives engaged in a grid search on both sides of 1-95 and along Bristol Pike and the under/overpass.

According to court records, a Bensalem Police patrol officer stopped a black Nissan Pathfinder SUV bearing PA registration MMN-4903 in the 3500 block of Bristol Pike on Wednesday, August 28,  at approximately 2:43 p.m. The National Crime Information Center (NCIC) revealed that the registration had been suspended. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer contacted the driver, later identified as Taheem Armstrong, 36 of Bristol and the front seat passenger, later identified as 30-year-old Kevin Williams of Philadelphia. As of this May, Armstrong had a DUI suspended license and an active warrant for drug delivery out of Bensalem Township, said police.

Following the vehicle stop, Armstrong and Williams fled on foot from the Pathfinder the probable cause said.

As they  fled authorities observed Williams carrying a gray book bag. A perimeter was setup to track the fleeing suspects, which unbeknownst to LBS tipsters was the search for the bag and the suspects. Authorities located a bag similar in color and size to the one Williams fled with in the area where the Bensalem Police traffic stop was initialed.

Approximately 30 grams of suspected heroin were found in the Pathfinder’s back seat, along with a blender and packaging material (blue wax bags and unused trash can-style containers), authorities said.

Bensalem Police with the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) in conjunction with Amtrak Police due to the proximity of rail lines maintained the perimeter as the search for the suspects continued for almost three hours, including a K-9 officer, before spotting them on Bristol Pike near I-95 in Bensalem. after they fled from Pennsylvania State Police. After a foot pursuit, the PSP located and detained Armstrong and Williams. In both cases, the subjects resisted arrest and failed to obey police commands. A PSP Trooper suffered injuries to his hand and head while taking the subjects into custody. After being treated at a local hospital, he was discharged. When detained, both subjects had suspected marijuana in their possession, police said.

Armstrong  was charged with drug trafficking offenses,  resisting arrest, and traffic violations. His bail was set at 10% of $200,000 by District Justice Terrance Hughes and was remanded to Bucks County Jail.

Williams  has a felony conviction, preventing him from possessing or controlling a firearm.  He was charged with two felonies, possession of firearm and unlicensed firearm, several traffic misdemeanor offenses  drugs.  He was arraigned by District Justice Hughes and bail was set at 10% of $200,000.

Their preliminary hearings are scheduled for October 8 in front of  Magisterial District Judge Michael W. Gallagher.

“Bensalem Police appreciates the assistance of PSP and Amtrak Police with their help in  apprehending the suspects,” a press release from Pubic Safety Director William McVey said.
