Conwell-Egan Student Charged with Rape, Officials Say

A Conwell-Egan High School Student has been charged with sexual assault by Philadelphia Police and was suspended from school pending the outcome of upcoming court proceedings, according to a letter penned by school President, Thomas Lynch.

A concerned citizen provided the publication with a copy of the letter sent to the Conwell-Egan community Tuesday.

The accused student was not identified by school officials, however, Police earlier today identified the accused as Zamire Cottrell, 18 of Bensalem.

According to Police Cottrell raped a 16 year-old at a party in Northeast Philadelphia last month.

School officials said Cottrell wasn’t in school on Monday or Tuesday, and he has been “indefinitely suspended.”

“The safety and protection of the young people entrusted to our care are always our primary concern. We are grateful law enforcement for alerting us to this situation and will continue to cooperate with them in the course of their work,” said Lynch

According to online Philadelphia Court records, Cattrell was arraigned on April 7, and posted bail that was set at 10 percent of $150,000.

He  is charged with rape, sexual, false imprisonment, indecent assault and a slew of of related sex crime offenses. Cattrell’s next court appearance is scheduled for April 19, for a preliminary hearing before Judge Vincent W. Furlong.
