National Fire Prevention Week Focuses on How You Can Smoke Alarms Work for You

“Smoke Alarms: Make them Work for You” is this year’s theme for National Fire Prevention Week which began this past Sunday.

This year’s campaign, from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA),  strives to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.

During this week and next, Oct 6 – Oct 19, several fire companies in the readership area will also host events encompassing fire protection and prevention. Bristol Boro fire companies will be visiting schools and day care centers Oct 7 – Oct 9 to educate the children on fire safety. They’ll also be sharing important fire prevention materials on Bristol Day at key locations in town. Some of the other companies hosting Fire Prevention and Open House events are:

Tuesday – Oct 8 – Morrisville Fire Company – 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
528 N Pennsylvania Ave, Morrisville.

Thursday – Oct 10 – Fairless Hills Station 31 – 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
425 Hood Boulevard, Fairless Hills

Saturday – Oct 12 – Middletown Township Fire and Emergency Services –
9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Event will be held at Restaurant Depot Parking Lot
1661 Lincoln Highway, Langhorne

Saturday – Oct 12 – Newportville Fire Company # 1, Station 12/82 –
12 p.m. – 4 p.m. 2425 New Falls Rd, Levittown

Wednesday – Oct 16 – Levittown Fire Company #1 – 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
701 Fallsington-Tullytown Road, Levittown

In keeping with the Smoke Alarm theme, the NFPA offers these tips to ensure the smoke alarms will protect you and your loved ones in case of fire:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level of the home, including the basement.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or stop responding when tested.
  • Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
