A 2-alarm fire in Bristol Borough ripped through several homes and displaced 13 people Friday morning, fire officials said.
Bristol area fire crews were dispatched to the 341 block of Garfield St. at about 9:40 a.m. for a report of a house fire.
First arriving fire units found a heavy fire at the rear of three dwellings (six apartments) and went into service with hand lines. With multiple additional exposure dwellings a second alarm was sounded, Bristol Borough Fire Chief Herb Slack, said.
The fire caused heavy damage to three of the units, Slack said, with 13 residents displaced and being helped by the Red Cross for temporary shelter.
Classes were in session at Bristol High School, on Wilson Ave and Garfield Street, when the multi-home blaze started to burn and were dismissed early for the day shortly after the fire was placed sometime around 10 a.m.
A next door neighbor told Lower Bucks Source her husband called 911 to report the blaze.
He was outside talking to another neighbor, she said, when he noticed a plume of smoke rising from the back area of the homes.
While speaking with the neighbor, what sounded like a fire/smoke detector started to chirp in the background from one of the homes wrecked by the fire.
The Bristol community, quickly started to collect clothing and other basic needs for 13 residents that were displaced. We hope to have a comprehensive listing where and how locals can help victims of the fire.
As of publication time, one Go Fund Me effort was launched to help Chris Jonic and his family who like many others “lost everything” in the devastating fire.
Addresses affected are 327, 331, 333, 335 and 337 on Garfield St, Slack said.
Miraculously there were no injuries to pets or persons reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
