Bristol Borough Fire Chief Herb Slack was invited to attend the American Legion Department of Pennsylvania annual convention in Harrisburg last Saturday July to receive the Fire Fighter of the Year Award for 2022.
Chief Slack was nominated by the Levittown Memorial American Legion Post 960 for the award and was selected from all nominations across the state for the award. The nomination included background about the reason the chief was recommended and included joining the fire service at age 16, working his way through the Company ranks as captain, assistant chief and first elected Company chief in 1975. A position he has maintained for 46 years. Chief Slack continued his promotions as Borough Fire Marshal and Deputy Fire Chief and in 2005 was appointed as the Borough Fire Chief overseeing all fire operations within the Borough. Chief Slack also served his community as a social studies teach, a local coach and retired after 33 years from a civil service position with the Department of the Navy having worked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and the Naval Support Activity Philadelphia.

After being presented the Department Fire Fighter of the Year Award Chief Slack was asked to remain at the podium where he and the entire delegation in attendance were surprised when he was presented with a second award , the American Legion New England Region Fire fighter of the Year Award.
These two awards recognized Chief Slack not only as the top nominee in the entire state of Pennsylvania, but also one of the top three nominees from across the country.
