According to Bristol Borough Police Chief Steve Henry, the driver was a 37 year-old man from Philadelphia .
The man’s identity was not released nor was an investigative determination as to why the vehicle crashed into Delaware, by Bristol authorities in a follow up request.
As originally reported by Lower Bucks Sourceon Sunday First Responders from the Bristol Police, Bristol Fire Company, Bucks County Rescue Squad, marine units from American Hose, Hook and Ladder, Croydon Fire Company, and Burlington City Fire Department were dispatched for reports of vehicle in the river behind the King George Inn
Witnesses in the area said the 2019 blue Chevy Impala came careening into the park, smashing a bench and then went into the Delaware at the Bristol Wharf extension.
Images appearing on social media shortly after the vehicles submerging into the river showed most of the Chevrolet under water, while locals gathered to watch the rescue operation by first responders.
The vehicle was recovered by the Trenton NJ Fire Department Dive Team, Borough Fire Marshal Herb Slack said.
Divers recovered the body from the car and then worked to secure the vehicle for removal from the river, Slack said. Rob’s Towing responded and with the assistance of the emergency responders was able to remove the vehicle witnesses on scene told Lower Bucks Source.
The Coast guard was notified about fluids leaked from the vehicle Slack said, but no further action was needed.
First responders were on scene for five hours, he said.
Contrary to social media posts a second person was not in the vehicle at the time of the crash, officials indicated.
