The Bristol man who attacked an officer outside the federal courthouse in Philadelphia, almost two years ago, will spend the next 4.5 years in Federal Prison.
Anthony Lombardo, 46, of Bristol, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Nitza I. Quiñones Alejandro to 54 months in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release for assault on a federal officer, United States Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero announced.
He pled guilty earlier this year to assault of an officer.
On the morning of January 17, 2023, Lombardo drove to the James A. Byrne U.S. Courthouse at 7th & Market Streets in Philadelphia, where he brandished a large kitchen knife and approached a court security officer who was patrolling the exterior of the building. After Lombardo ignored the officer’s request to drop the knife, the officer shot the Bristol man.
While first responders administered aid to Lombardo, they discovered another kitchen knife hidden in his shirtsleeve and makeshift body armor attached to his chest and midsection, investigators said within hours of the knife attack. Lombardo has a a prior criminal conviction in Bucks County for assault of a police officer.
Days before showing up outside the federal courthouse, Lombardo was supposed to appear for a hearing in District Court. He had been accused of cutting the cable wires near his home three times. It was a highly unusual case, his attorney at the time said.
“Twice now, Anthony Lombardo has targeted police and security officers with violence,” said U.S. Attorney Romero. “Whatever your goals or grievances, if you try to harm someone working to protect a federal courthouse or facility, rest assured that my office and our partners will work to hold you fully accountable,” Romero said.
The case was investigated by the FBI and the United States Marshals Service and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Justin Ashenfelter.
