A.J. DeAngelis like so many volunteer firefighters is running out to calls at 2:32 a.m. on any given Tuesday, and had the firefighter “bug” long before he joined up when he was 16.

As a matter of fact, DeAngelis said, said his father “Ronnie” and now retired Emergency Management Coordinator Merle Winslow spent many a day discussing the fire services before he himself became a first responder. On Monday, with his family in attendance, A. J., who Winslow highly recommended, was sworn in as the new emergency management coordinator for Bristol Borough.

Bristol Borough Mayor Ralph DiGuiseppe III performed the swearing in ceremony.

“I just wanted to uh thank Merle Winslow for this recommendation uh he was unable to make it tonight and I hope that I could do as good a job as he’s done over the last 20 plus years,” DeAngelis said, after he was sworn in.

“I just want to say you know we thank Merle a million times up here and we’re forever grateful for the time he served as the Emergency Management coordinator but I have the utmost faith and you’re going to you know take it to a new level and we all appreciate everything you’ve already done for the Borough. You were on top of the snowstorm already so we already got you in in a little active duty and we know you’re going to do a great job in the future so thank you,” the mayor said.

DeAngelis has more than 25 years in the fire services and currently works as  career firefighter for neighboring Bristol Township and was appointed deputy borough fire chief in 2021.   He also currently serves on the leadership board of the Bristol Borough Fire Association and in various leadership positions with the Bristol Consolidated Fire Station #50.
