Bristol Police Promotes Two to Police Sgt.

Two Bristol Township Police Officers were promoted and sworn in  at last weeks council meeting.

Michael Slaughter and Dennis Leighton were both promoted to the rank of Police Sergeant last week.

Slaughter who served six years in the Marine Corps Reserves and is a 24 year veteran of the police department.

He was assigned to patrol upon hire,  followed by promotions to special investigations and then detective in 2008. Slaughter is a certified child forensic interviewer for crimes committed against children. Slaughter also serves as a fire arms trainer conducting qualifier trainings

Slaughter is also known, unofficially,, as a recovery house expert as he created a database of all the recovery homes in the township, and many others outside of it, when dozens of them opened their doors in the area, over the last 15 or so years.

Leighton is a 19 year veteran of the police department assigned to the patrol division upon hire, followed by assignments in gang enforcement (2006) and is one of the few court recognized gang experts in Bucks County. From 2008 to 2014, he was assigned to the FBI’s Bucks County Gang Task Force. From June 2015 to February Leighton was assigned to the narcotics unit and is also a member of the county’s south SWAT team.

Leighton has also served in the Army Reserve for 21 years, having been deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, Haiti and Italy, retiring from the Army in 2017.

“I have full confidence in their abilities to mentor and supervise the men and woman under their command for years to come,” Chief of Police Robert Coulton said.

Each were sworn in by Bristol Township Judge Robert Wagner
