A Bristol Township man spying on his former girlfriend and her teen daughters while using the bathroom with a hidden camera was sentenced to six to 23 months jail time for being an absolute creep.
John V. Dutton, 55, entered a guilty pleas to six counts of invasion of privacy, two counts of interception of oral communications, and one count of possession of a controlled substance last February.
Common Pleas Judge Charissa J. Liller sentenced Duttom to six to 23 months’ county jail time, followed by 11 years of consecutive probation.
During the sentencing hearing, one of the victims provided a handwritten victim impact statement, which was read aloud. In her statement, she wrote, “I have lost so many hours of sleep because I can’t turn thoughts and feelings off about these events. I drive myself insane about the dates and acts of the crime because it doesn’t make sense that a man who was in my life from 2011-2023 who was supposed to be a father figure, who loved cared, protected me would suddenly after all these years do that to my sister and I.” She concluded, “I am no longer the same and never will be,” according to a press release from the District Attorney’s office.
The investigation began in August 2023 when the victims’ mother discovered what she believed to be a spy camera disguised as a USB cell phone charging port in the bathroom of the residence she shared with Dutton. Her two daughters and son also lived in the home.
She first became suspicious of Dutton after he insisted that they either not have a shower curtain in their common bathroom, or they have a clear curtain, according to court records.
While searching the bathroom, she found a USB charging device that appeared to have a small camera inside positioned with a view of the shower. She unplugged the device but left it in the bathroom. Moments later, Dutton entered the bathroom and stayed inside for an unusually long time. When he left, the device was gone, the probable cause alleged.
During the investigation, another camera was found in the pool cabana area of the backyard, police said.
In November 2023, Bristol police executed a search warrant for the home. They seized the defendant’s cell phone, where they uncovered videos of the girls undressing and showering in the bathroom. The date range for these videos was February 2021 to March 2023.
Police also located methamphetamine in the house during the search. Another search warrant was executed on an iCloud account associated with Dutton’s other devices, according to court records. Police located 261 audio and video recordings of the two girls in partial or full nudity in the bathroom recorded between 2021 and 2023.
