Morrisville Police: Catalytic Converter Thefts on the Rise, Especially for Trucks

The Morrisville Police Department is warning its residents about a recent uptick in vehicle thefts where cars have been stolen so thieves can remove their catalytic converters.

Morrisville Police said recent car thefts show a pattern where vehicles stolen are taken to another location just so thieves can remove the device.

The catalytic converter regulates a vehicle’s emissions and in some vehicles, sawing it off can take just a minute. In others, it’s a bit more difficult, experts say. Auto Insurance experts say thieves target the converters because they can be easily flipped for cash at scrap yards due to the  precious metals they contain and the soaring prices of those elements.

Authorities said in a press release,  on June 18, Falls and Morrisville Police took reports of Ford model truck and van thefts where the converters were stolen.

The rise in these types of thefts is being seen throughout the region and nationally too.

Please make sure to lock your vehicles and park in a well lit area. If possible install motion sensor lights along your driveway and have your vehicle equipped with an alarm, police suggest.

Catalytic converter thefts have also been reported in Newtown Township as recent as last week.
