A Levittown man was arrested, for felonies of attempted robbery and possession of a firearm along with a slew of lesser degree charges including endangering the welfare of children, when police responded to a domestic incident the day after Christmas that started as a discussion on family finances.
On December 26th, 2024, Middletown Twp. Police responded to the 2000 block of Veterans Highway for the report of a domestic in progress. The caller reported that he was locked in his bedroom and his mother’s boyfriend was trying to break down the door stating he was going to shoot him and his brother, according to court papers.
Upon arrival, police met the complainant’s mother who was waiting for police in her living room. She told police an argument escalated with her boyfriend, suspect Jonathan Newsome, when discussing finances. Continuing, she reported possessing a firearm tucked in her pants pocket and Newsome assaulted her in an attempt to take the gun from her pocket. The victim said Newsome pushed her into the bathroom and repeatedly struck her with a closed fist in the chest and head. He attempted to gain possession of the firearm. The victim said her two juvenile sons locked themselves in their bedroom when the incident occurred and Newsome tried to break down their door, police wrote in court records.
One of the two sons reported that as Newsome was attempting to break down his door he was screaming that he was going to kill them and he asked “where is the gun?”
Police collected a prescription pill bottle labeled as clonazepam and prescribed to another person not involved in the incident. The mother said Newsome brought the prescription into the house and ingested a few pills prior to police arrival. She also provided a small baggie containing a green leafy substance identified as marijuana. She stated it belonged to the same person whose name was on the clonazepam prescription bottle, police said.
The filing officer observed two red marks on the victim’s head and one on her upper chest. She stated the marks were caused by Newsome when he attacked her that evening. Police also observed scratch marks on the boy’s door where Newsome tried to break the door down. During the altercation, the victim stated that Newsome successfully took possession of the firearm but it was returned to her prior to police arrival.
The victim said she was scared for her children’s wellbeing in the home so she waited in the living room until police arrived court records show.
A query of Newsome’s criminal history indicated that he has a robbery conviction out of Virgina, making him a person not to possess a firearm, police said.
Newsome is currently on probation for a prior arrest in Philadelphia for carrying a firearm without a permit, according to the probable cause.
Newsome is scheduled to appear at a court hearing on Jan 8. He was remanded to Bucks County Correctional in lieu of 10 percent of $200 000.00 bail.
