United Way Launches Effort to LIFT Those Living in Near Poverty

Credit: United Way

Just in case you haven’t heard, United Way has launched a new pilot program in partnership with Credit Counseling Center, Bucks County, and Penn Community Bank.

The LIFT United program combines financial literacy education and counseling and a chance for eligible participants to apply for a low-interest used car loan. This special rate (3.5% interest) is offered by Penn Community Bank, because United Way will secure the loan for eligible participants. LIFT United is ideal for those who are currently employed, but who have a less than perfect credit score and who need help securing reliable transportation to maintain their employment.

LIFT United is designed to primarily serve those who are in the ALICE population (Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, and Employed). These individuals and families are working, making too much to qualify for most public benefits, but not enough to meet all of their basic needs.

ALICE households are forced to make tough choices, such as deciding between quality child care or paying the rent, which have long-term consequences not only for ALICE, but for all.

ALICE seeks to help families overcome financial challenges in order to improve quality of life standards and facilitate upward financial mobility.
