Following a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is on the rise, The Giant Company announced that Tdap vaccines are now available in all Giant’s in-store pharmacies.

Whooping cough is a serious respiratory disease that can be life-threatening for infants. The CDC recommends Tdap vaccinations for everyone with booster doses recommended every 10 years, or sooner if pregnant or injured. This vaccine is a combination of shots that protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis/whooping cough.

Giant pharmacies must meet state requirements for administering Tdap vaccines. These include:

  • Pennsylvania pharmacies can vaccinate customers 18 and up without a prescription.
  • Maryland pharmacies can vaccinate ages 7 and up without a prescription.
  • Virginia pharmacies can vaccinate ages 3-17 with a physician’s prescription, and 18 and up without a prescription.
  • West Virginia pharmacies can vaccinate ages 3 and up without a prescription.

If customers are unsure if in need of a Tdap vaccine, Giant pharmacists can look at their history and determine eligibility. Walk-in vaccinations are available, but customers can save time by booking an appointment online at giantfoodstores.com/pages/tgc-vaccines. Customers must bring photo ID and prescription insurance card. Parental consent is required, and parent/guardian must be on site.

In addition, customers can visit any in-store Giant pharmacy to receive their flu vaccination. Flu and pertussis vaccines can be given together.
