Democratic Lt Governor John Fetterman and Republican Doug Mastriano won their respective primaries Tuesday night, as the Republican nomination for Senate is still to be decided.
Fetterman who recently suffered a stroke defeated Congressman Conor Lamb.
“This is the most important race in the country. Control of the Senate is going to come down to Pennsylvania, and we have to flip this seat. We have a hard fight ahead of us — but Pennsylvania is worth fighting for,” he said press release.
Lamb, threw his full support behind Fetterman after conceding saying he will do everything he can to help Fetterman win the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Pat Toomey.
The outcome on the Republican side is still up for grabs, as Mamet Oz and Dave McCormick are in a dead hit with a recount expected to happen since they are within .5 pct of each other. The recount is automatically triggered by state law when margins are less than .5 percecnt.
On the Republican side, state Senator Doug Mastriano (Franklin Co) defeated a crowded field of contenders and was declared a winner two hours after polls closed in Pennsylvania in the Republican race for be nominee for governor.
A retired Army colonel, Mastriano has risen to prominence espousing far-right views directly to a homegrown network of online supporters. He’s also known for his support of a lie that widespread election fraud led to former President Donald Trump’s loss in 2020. For that, Mastriano received Trump’s endorsement, NPR reported.
National pollsters watching the results come in moved the Governor’s race to “lean democrat” after Mastriano’s primary win.
Meanwhile Democratic Attorney General Josh Shapiro who did not hold any public events Tuesday due to a coronavirus infection, said he’s ready to take on Mastriano in November.
I’m humbled and honored to be your Democratic nominee for Governor of Pennsylvania. No matter which dangerous extremist we’re against this November, the stakes are too damn high for anything but a victory.
Mastriano is among the sitting lawmakers who have been subpoenaed by a U.S. House committee that is investigating the U.S. Capitol attack.
Our opponent attended the insurrection at our nation’s Capitol. When police told him to stop, he defied them. He crossed their barricades. Now, he’s the Republican Nominee for Governor of Pennsylvania. The stakes of this election are too high. We have to beat him in November, said Shapiro on Twitter this morning.
