Smaller Pension Fund Contribution is Due to Stronger Market Bensalem Officials Say

Bensalem Township will contribute slightly more than $6.41 million to its police department and non-uniformed employee pension plans in 2027, a decrease over last years contribution.

Financial Manager John Chaykowski went over the township’s pension numbers for 2027 at Monday night’s Council meeting

According to Chaykowski for 2027, police came in at slightly more than $6.41 million, nonuniform was $662,805, and non-uniform defined contribution was $362,000.

That is $386,000 less than the township’s contribution in 2026, officials said.

“We do receive state aid every year from the Attorney General to help offset these cost, and in 2025 it was roughly $1,993,035 and some change.” Chaykowski explained to the council members.

“For 2026 it’s actually down, the state decreased the evaluation number for each employee in the pension plan, it’s now $1,917,043,” he  added.

Nonuniformed employees are township employees such as office clerks, administrative staff etc, as opposed to police or firefighters.

Council vice president Jesse Solan had two questions for Chaykowski. The first one inquired about if these numbers were bounded by the current township’s budget.

Chaykowski responded that when these numbers come out, they’ll get moved into the budget.

“So you’ll see the budget numbers are a little higher because you have professional service fees that get assessed to it as well, but these numbers are static and are what’s contributing to the pension plan.”

Solan asked how do the current numbers compare to last years, in which Chaykowski explained that they were lower than last year.

“The market has been doing better in the past year or so, these numbers are lower than 2026.”

No further questions were asked by any other Bensalem council members and no action was required.
