Falls Recognized as Bird Town Community

Heidi Shiver, president of Bird Town Pennsylvania, presented the Falls Supervisors with a plaque during Monday’s Supervisors meeting (from left) Supervisor Brian Galloway, Environmental Advisory Council Chairman Jonathan Manderack, Supervisors Chairman Jeff Dence, Supervisors Vice Chairperson Erin Mullen, Supervisor John Palmer and Environmental Advisory Council secretary Jairus James.

A goal of becoming known one day as a Bird Town community was realized during Monday night’s Falls Township Board of Supervisors (BOS) meeting as officials continued to work towards attracting birds to the community.

Bird Town Pennsylvania, LLC President Heidi Shiver was on hand for the BOS meeting to speak about the importance of birds and threats to their habitat. She also presented a plaque honoring the township as a Pennsylvania Audubon Council Bird Town.

Shiver told the board that 13 other municipalities in Bucks County are Bird Town communities. As of this year, Bird Town Pennsylvania has 69 programs across 12 counties. The program began more than 14 years ago, according to the Birdtown website.

Pennsylvania Audubon Council works with municipalities to engage and educate residents, schools and businesses about conservation measures that could contribute to a healthier, more sustainable environment for birds and wildlife.

Falls Township holds a Bronze Certification and could progress to a Silver or Gold Certification with the completion of additional initiatives, according to the Bird Town Pennsylvania website.

“We recognize that communities vary by financial and human capital,” the Bird Town Pennsylvania website states. “We have developed a tiered structure that allows communities to start small and work their way up to superstar. Bird Towns begin with Green Certification with minimal requirements and follow-up with Bronze, Silver and Gold levels each with increasing expectations. They may do this at their own pace without time restrictions.”
