National Night Out is set to take place on Tuesday August 4 throughout the country.
NNO is an annual community-building campaign that strengthens police-community partnerships, fosters neighborhood camaraderie and aims to create safer, more caring places to live, say National Night Out officials and most communities in the readership area are preparing for exciting events in 2026.
The seeds for NNO were originally planted in the western suburbs of Philadelphia when the man named Matt who volunteered with Lower Merion Community Watch program, that works in cooperation with the Lower Merion Police Department. He noticed a shared platform did not exist and as a result established the National Association of Town Watch in 1981.
National Association of Town Watch was founded only a few years later to provide community watch groups the necessary information, resources and assets to stay informed, interested, involved, and motivated within the community.
NNO was introduced in August of 1984 through an already established network of law enforcement agencies, neighborhood watch groups, civic groups, state and regional crime prevention associations and volunteers across the nation. The first annual NNO involved 2.5 million neighbors across 400 communities in 23 states, according to the non profits website.
38 million neighbors, 17,000 communities, over the last 43 years have come out to support NNO since its official inception, a spokesperson for the nationwide event.
And its reach and impact continues to grow.
