By summer, two Falls Township intersections will be upgraded with an improved traffic signal and an improved pedestrian walkway.
During Monday night’s Falls Supervisors meeting, the board authorized advertisement for bids to undertake a pedestrian crosswalk enhancement project at New Falls Road and Vermillion Drive; and a traffic signal improvement project at Trenton Road and North Olds Boulevard.
Remington & Vernick Engineers Project Manager Derrick Kennedy said construction would begin on the pedestrian crosswalk on approximately May 5 and continue for about three months. The anticipated timeline for the traffic signal upgrade at Trenton Road and North Olds Boulevard is expected to begin on or about April 21 and continue for approximately five months, according to Kennedy.
In terms of the pedestrian crosswalk at New Falls Road and Vermillion Drive, the project entails adding a push button-activated pedestrian warning system using rectangular rapid flashing beacons. Existing pavement markings and signage will also be improved in association with the pedestrian signal installation.
“I’m excited to see this project. It’s been a long time coming,” Supervisor Jeff Boraski said, adding that the board began considering the project at the start of his first term on the board, which began nearly 12 years ago and will conclude at year’s end. “It’s a good way to end my 12-year career.”
Supervisor Vice Chairperson Erin Mullen, who ran Monday’s meeting, thanked Boraski for his
persistence.
The other project includes a full traffic signal replacement and modernization at the intersection of Trenton Road and North Olds Boulevard, including associated roadway improvements and ADA ramps.
The project will be funded by a Green Light Go grant, with a 20 percent township match.
“I look forward to seeing it getting done,” Supervisor Brian Galloway said, noting concerns with children crossing the roadway before and after school. “It really needs this.”
