A Yardley Borough Councilmen elect announced Sunday he would not take the seat he won at Tuesday’s election because of racist posts he made in the past on a social media account under a different profile name.

Democrat Patrick McGovern said the race fueled posts he was responsible for were meant to be “satire,” and not intended to harm or single out anyone specifically.

“In order to avoid distracting from the transition to the new Council, I have decided not to accept the position of Borough Councilman in January. At that time I will not accept the position and the Borough Council will follow the process to appoint a new member” McGovern said in a social media post.

Earlier in the week, Councilwoman Sandi Brady resigned her seat as a result of a heated exchange Yardley Patch reported Thursday.

McGovern’s posts were cited by Brady saying her position was too much to bear as a member of the Yardley Borough Council in her resignation letter to Mayor Chris Harding. The resignation letter was read to aloud at the meeting on Wednesday which neither attended.

“Regarding Ms. Brady’s resignation, I had read in one of the stories that she decided to resign from Council before the outcome of Tuesday’s election. She had experienced much frustration in the past, and I’m sorry if my posts exacerbated that”
