The RC2 phase of U.S.1 construction is expected to be completed by mid-2025, a year sooner than expected, according to PennDOT’s year-end updates.
In part two of PennDOT’s three-phase project to improve U.S. 1 in Bucks County, Section RC2 reconstructs and widens a continuous section of highway in Bensalem and Middletown townships, replaces several bridges, and improves several interchanges.
Completed Work:
- A major structural project to widen and improve U.S. 1 in Bucks County has been completed with new bridges over the Penndel/Business U.S. 1 interchange and over Rockhill Drive at the Neshaminy exit.
- Southbound lanes approaching Penndel/Business U.S. 1 were equipped with sound panels.
- The southbound U.S. 1 bridge replacement over Rockhill Drive at the Neshaminy Exit has been completed.
- The ramp from Horizon Boulevard as well as the ramp from Rockhill Drive were reopened.
Partially Completed Work:
- The new northbound U.S. 1 bridge over Neshaminy Creek has been substantially completed and partially opened to traffic.
- At the interchange on Rockhill Drive under the new U.S. 1 bridge, work has shifted to widening the eastbound roadway.
- During remaining roadway construction, the new northbound bridge over Neshaminy Creek is being used as a temporary off-ramp for Penndel/Business U.S. 1 while northbound and southbound through traffic on U.S. 1 remains on the new southbound bridge.
Remaining Work:
- Until mid-2025, the remaining work will involve widening U.S. 1 to three lanes in each direction between the new bridges.
- From the Neshaminy exit and the twin bridges across the Neshaminy Creek, a base course of paving has been laid.
- The remaining roadwork will be completed over the winter as weather permits.
- A final paving “wearing course” will be placed along the entire project area next spring during the final stage of the project that began in 2021.
- During the spring, the U.S. 1 bridge over Neshaminy Creek and the roadways in Bensalem and Middletown townships will be connected
Officials pointed to the anticipated Spring 25 completion in earlier updates this year.
The third U.S.1 project -RC3- is in final design and not yet scheduled for construction but will improve U.S. 1 north of Penndel/Business U.S. 1.
