A Bensalem man will serve up to 30 years in state prison for killing his roommate last year.
Gregory Hylton, 41, was sentenced last month to 15 to 30 years behind bars for the March 9 shooting inside a Knights Road apartment that claimed the life of 25-year-old Sharif Simpson.
Hylton told police what up led up to the shooting was an argument with Simpson about a mess in their shared apartment, a criminal complaint says
During the argument, Hylton pushed Simpson onto a bed, pulled a 9mm handgun and struck Simpson several times with the gun before firing a single shot. The fatal shot – fired at extremely close range, the evidence showed – struck Simpson in the chest.
Though he insisted he did not recall pulling the trigger, Hylton pleaded guilty in October to third-degree murder, possession of an instrument of crime and possession of marijuana.
In addition to prison time, Judge Diane E. Gibbons also ordered Hylton to make restitution of $1,150 to the Bucks County Victims Fund. The case was investigated by Bensalem Township Police with the assistance of Bucks County Detectives and prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Robert D. James.
