A 30 year-old Bristol woman was sentenced to just under one and ma two years in jail for stealing $17,000 from a woman living with cancer she was providing help too.
Kelly Sharkey pleaded guilty in September to access device fraud and theft by unlawful taking and was sentenced today to jail time at the Bucks County Correctional Facility by Justice Diane Gibbons
Sharkey was also sentenced to five years probation and to pay restitution costs of about $17,500.
She will serve a minimum of one day short of a full year and maximum of one day short of two years.
According to a press release, the victim hired Sharkey around June of 2019 to run errands for household purchases for her because of a surgical procedure involving partial removal of her tongue due to cancer which made it difficult for her to speak. Sharkey was provided with the victims credit and debit card, making unauthorized purchases with both.
The victim confronted Sharkey in November of 2019 about the unauthorized charges, which she denied at the time. The victim contacted Bristol Township Police subsequently. Police Detective William O’Keefe obtained bank records, surveillance footage from local stores which showed the, at the time, suspect making purchases matching up with transactions noted in financial records.
According to police, Sharkey made a total of 69 unauthorized using the victims debit and credit cards from June to November of 2019.
Authorities say she also had the temerity to use the victims cards to put money “on the books” for the father of Sharkey’s child while he was an inmate at Bucks County Jail.
The victim said, who was a friend of Sharkey’s grandmother, in a victim impact statement that the theft made it hard for her to trust anyone.
Sharkey was also given concurrent sentences in five other cases Thursday according to a release from the district attorney’s office.
The Bristol woman also pleaded guilty to retail theft, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia for an October 2017 arrest at a Walmart in Tullytown; harassment for a September 2020 child custody case; driving under the influence for a Bensalem Township arrest in May 2020; retail theft and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia for a May 2020 arrest at a CVS in Bristol Township; and retail theft for June 2020 arrest at a Wawa in Bristol Township.
