Monday afternoons fire on Mill Street in Bristol Borough was caused by an electrical outlet overload fire officials said Tuesday.

Bristol Borough Fire Chief Herb Slack said when fire companies arrived at 300 Mill St., just before 4 p.m. they found a light smoke condition and an electrical type odor.

Fire crews checked the basement and all three floors and finally located an electrical outlet that had a melted plug and a scorch area above the outlet, Slack said.

“The outlet had been providing power to three power strips plugged in series, all with numerous additional electrical devices.”

One person was asleep at the time of the fire was awakened by the smoke alarm, said Slack, exiting the building safely but was taken to Aria Torresdale Hospital for possible smoke inhalation.

The fire response shut down Mill St at Old Rt 13/Pond Street creating traffic to pile up for about one hour as first responders redirected traffic away from the merchant district.

Fire was placed under control and all units cleared the scene by 1700 hours, officials said.
