It’s that sound homeowners and renters dread hearing. The ruffling noise when a would-be burglar tries to break in that alerted a Morrisville Borough resident earlier this month of the impending danger and in a finely scripted ending landed a Trenton man with “three hots and a cot” for the time being.

Early morning Monday June 2, 2025 at approximately 4:37 a.m. police were dispatched to a Fairview Avenue residence for a burglary in progress report. The homeowner/victim told the responding officers that a dark skinned male wearing a zed hat and red sweatshirt tried to break into his home through the back door, officers wrote in court papers.

On scene Officer Bradlee Smeltzer asked fellow Officer Carlin to check the Calhoun Street Bridge for anyone fitting the suspect’s description provided by the homeowner.

The victim told police he and his wife heard a noise at the back door. When he went to “investigate” he saw a dark skinned male wearing a red hat and red sweatshirt trying to break into his home through a sunroom door. The victim said he could see the suspect through the sliding glass door and yelled at him, ”yo what the f**k”. The alleged burglar then sprinted off through the backyard towards the Calhoun Street Bridge, police wrote in court papers.

The sunroom door displayed obvious signs of forced entry; the handle was busted and there were pry marks on the bandle/keyhole area, the criminal complaint alleges.

While the homeowner spoke to police, Officer Carlin announced over the air a male fitting the description provided in custody was on the Trenton side of the Calhoun Street Bridge.

Smeltzer drove the victim to West State Street and Calhoun where he pulled behind Officer Carlin’s patrol vehicle. Officer Carlin presented a black male, later identified as Kevin Leftwich at the time. The victim positively identified Leftwich as the man who attempted to break into his home. Leftwich was placed back in the rear of Officer Carlin’s vehicle and Trenton Police were advised to respond to his location. Carlin, according to court papers, said Leftwich had a crack pipe in his pocket. While in the rear seat Leftwich made several comments to Officer Carlin admitting he was in Morrisville and stating he didn’t steal anything so what’s the charge, attempted burglary?

Leftwich was transported back to Trenton Police Headquarters where he was charged with possessing a crack pipe. Shortly thereafter he was charged with felony counts of burglary, prowling and a summary offense. He was remanded to the custody of Bucks County Correctional with a court date set for June 24.
