Update: Abandoned Morrisville Dog “Winter” Seeks New Home As Charges Held Over by Judge in Animal Cruelty Case

The 20-year -old woman charged for animal cruelty by abandoning her two dogs in a Morrisville apartment without food and water had all of her charges held over in absentia, but did surrender her ownership rights, as one of the two canines grows stronger, healthier is now available for adoption.

The two dogs, which were rescued  by Humane Society Police officer Nicole Thompson and Morrisville Borough Police Corporeal Lew Halas in September, were placed with Bucks County SPCA to recover after they were left there by Jaylah Hayes, whose whereabouts are currently unknown. Hayes’ preliminary hearing was held in District Court on Oct. 30, in which she did not appear, according to online court records. Judge Corryn L. Kronnagel proceeded with the hearing, finding there was enough evidence to sustain the neglect, cruelty and related charges. The same day, she also requested a bench warrant for Hayes to be issued.

Cindy Kelly Director of Communications & Development for the SPCA said, “Winter,” the younger of the two mixed terriers, American pit bulls, responded well  to medical treatment, gained weight and looks to be a healthy and happy puppy despite the inhumanity she was put through. Kelly also said, Hayes contacted Humane Society officials to  surrender the dogs to the non-profit authorized to file and investigate the vicious treatment of all critters.

“We were excited” Kelly said about Hayes agreeing to surrender ownership of the canines.

Winter can now be adopted by anyone in the community. She is listed here looking bright eyed and smiling as she should be.

The second of the rescued dogs did not respond to the medical interventions provided by the veterinary and animal behavioral health team as we hoped, Kelly said, she demonstrated repeated aggressive behaviors that the treatment team worked for hours trying to eliminate, in the hopes she would be adoptable and unfortunately that is not the case, she said.

While all of the above was taking place, the person who called Morrisville Borough Police to report the dogs were abandoned originally, contacted Lower Bucks Source to share some background information on the dogs and the owner. The source clarified the prior neglect cases filed against Hayes were for different dogs.

“The officers, along with myself and a couple neighbors, did what we could to make them comfortable until SPCA could come out the day they were rescued,” the concerned citizen said.

“I’m very grateful to the Morrisville Police – the three responding officers – ” who came that day to save the pups that day.

SPCA officials also said the dog left in Williamson Park “Dottie” was quickly adopted after she was taken to the  Women’s Humane Society in Bensalem.

To report suspected animal cruelty you can call 844-SPCA-TIP (844-772-2847).

The suffering has ended for all three dogs, Kelly poignantly said.
