Bensalem Township Council approved a motion to file an application for funds under the Greenway, Trails and Recreational Program (GTRP) for up to $236,512.
Made at the council meeting on June 8th, the move is intended to improve outdoor facilities in the township, specifically the Valley Athletic Association field located on 5895 Hulmeville Rd.
Director of Administration John Chaykowski explained that the grant is to help towards converting one of the baseball fields into a soccer field.
“If you’ve driven by recently you know that the front right baseball field when you pull in, they’ve attempted to convert that it into soccer because they have additional needs for soccer.”
Chaykowski explained that with the grant they’ll be able to move irrigation lines, have additional lighting, and fencing if needed.

Additional parking is also being looked into, but it depends on location and grant proceeds.
“We’re not looking to add a large amount of parking, we’re just looking to add 20-30 spaces.”
While the grant will cover most of the expenses, there will be a township 15% match as the project is estimated to cost $278,000. Additionally, to offset costs township employees’ are being hired to help with the work needed on the field.
The council approved the motion with all being in favor of it.
