A Pennsylvania woman is said to have intentionally coughed on items at supermarket in Hanover Township ruining $35, 000.00 in groceries a store manage alleges in a social media post.
The as yet identified woman was a customer at a Hanover Township location of the small grocery chain Gerrity’s Supermarket.
The store’s co-owner Joe Fasula said the “the very twisted prank”occurred at 2:20 p.m, Wednesday when the woman coughed on fresh produce, a small section of the bakery, meat case and grocery items.
“We had no choice but to throw out all product she came in contact with.”
The unidentified woman is said to be a “chronic problem” in the community and health officials will make every effort to get her tested for COVID-19, Fasula said.
He estimated the loss to be upwards of $35,000 in goods and produce.
Local and County law enforcement were contacted immediately and the case has been escalated to the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office. They have assured me that they will be aggressively pursuing numerous charges while 15 employees were left with the task of disinfecting the store, Fasula said.
“The only silver lining to this travesty is that it gave us the unfortunate opportunity to test our protocols and demonstrate how seriously we take your safety. At one point, we had over 15 employees involved in the disposal and clean up”
An online review of arrests by Hanover Township Police through the online court system reveals no arrest has been made as of Thursday morning.
