The hockey rink at Falls Township Community Park will receive a facelift as part of a restoration project aimed at improving drainage.
The board on Monday approved a proposal for Sport Court of Pennsylvania to undertake the resurfacing of the hockey rink, as well as prep/drainage and surfacing. Improvements include the installation of a tiled system over the existing asphalt surface and the raising of the dasher boards to address the issue of poor drainage on the current playing surface.
Falls Township earmarked $135,000 in its 2026 capital budget for the upgrades. However, the total cost is more than 15 percent under budget at $113,025 total.
The rink, which was renovated in 2022 to include a new dasher board, resurfaced rink, and restored fencing, has had issues with rainwater collecting on its surface following storms. Upgrades improved the look and function of the roller hockey rink. The bulk of the project was funded by grants secured by Sen. Steve Santarsiero and Rep. John Galloway.
Township Engineer Joseph Jones said this improvement project will correct drainage problems.
“This surface is going to be retrofitted with drainage tiles,” Jones said. “The water that ponds can infiltrate.”
Upcoming construction will include milling, regrading, repaving the court and adding crack seal and filler to provide a surface that drains rainfall. In addition, the court will be cleared of any debris and geotextile felt will be underlaid over the entire area to ensure the surface will position and not shift. It also gives the floor a stable base needed for aggressive play.
Sport Court of Pennsylvania’s installation includes a five-year manufacturer’s warranty. During that period, the company will fully service and maintain the court against any buckling, shifting or any other problems that arise.
The company installed the same surface at Bensalem Community Park’s hockey rink.
