Pickleball, an extremely popular and growing sport is coming to Falls Township.
The Falls Township Board Of Supervisors unanimously approved awarding Keystone Sports Construction a contract to build four pickleball courts at Quaker Penn Park Monday.
Parks and Recreation Director Brian Andrews said a little under $295 K from the 2023 budget was initially designated for the project. Andrews said there is a good probability for some of the costs to be paid through a state grant.
Falls officials said they are open to expanding the number of courts in the future, potentially utilizing some field area if needed. .
Andrews said Pickleball is a “booming” sport throughout the county.
Chairperson Jeff Dence noted the sport’s growing popularity, too.
According to ReCreateYou.com pickleball, participation among Americans ages 6 and older increased 171.1% between 2018 and 2022, making it tops as the fastest growing sport in America.
Pickleball courts are smaller courts, smaller than tennis courts and the game is usually played in doubles.
Pickleball can be a very loud sport as it is similar in noise level to paddleball.
The courts will be constructed a good distance from residential areas and in proximity to the parks batting cage
Quaker Penn Park already boasts a playground, bathroom facility, boat ramp, ball field and more.
Officials said the courts would be first come first serve basis and plan on adding reservation services too.
The courts are expected to be completed this summer.
