Hedgerow Theatre Company (Hedgerow), located at 64 Rose Valley Road in Media invites audiences to gather with their loved ones to celebrate a timeless tale of family, friendship, and the bonds that unite communities with the premiere of playwright Kate Hamill’s stage adaptation of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.
Little Women is set to run from November 26 to December 28, with 25 performances presented in Hedgerow’s 100-seat theatre, housed in an atmospheric 19th-century grist mill.
Audiences will follow sisters Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy as they grow up together amid the American Civil War. Brave, bright, and endlessly imaginative, each sister faces the challenge of balancing her dreams with the weight of society’s expectations. Through moments of laughter, loss, and love, they discover that the true strength of family lies in unity, even when the world around them feels uncertain.
For Hedgerow’s production of Little Women, audiences can expect a fresh and intimate imagining of Alcott’s classic tale, enriched by moments of live music performed by the cast. While a few songs and instrumental passages appear as natural extensions of the story, such as Beth and Laurie sharing moments at the piano, music is used primarily as subtle underscoring and transition, deepening the emotional atmosphere throughout.
“At its heart, Little Women is about family, both the one we’re born into and the one we build,” said Director Abby Weissman. “In rehearsal, we’re exploring these dynamics within the story while also discovering our own sense of community as a company. In this version, the character of Beth engages in especially moving ways; her quiet attention to those around her becomes an act of love, inviting the audience to witness the story with the same tenderness. My hope is that people leave with a renewed appreciation for the small, everyday moments shared with their own families—both given and chosen.”
The production officially opens on Friday, November 28, at 7 p.m., and includes a special post-show reception featuring artists from the production. Performances run through Sunday, December 28. Little Women is recommended for audiences aged eight or older and has an estimated runtime of 135 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission.
