BCCC Students to Perform ‘Vagina Monologues’ Friday

Bucks County Community College students will put on a public performance of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” later this week.

The event marks V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women (cisgender, transgender, and those with fluid identities). To that end, there will be a post-performance discussion with the cast and representatives from A Woman’s Place,  which provides resources and support for victims of domestic violence agency in Bucks County.

The performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 in the Zlock Performing Arts Center at the Newtown campus. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit A Woman’s Place, a domestic violence agency in Bucks County.

“The Vagina Monologues” is an Obie Award-winning whirlwind tour of a forbidden zone which introduces a wildly divergent gathering of female voices, including a six-year-old girl, a septuagenarian New Yorker, a woman who witnesses the birth of her granddaughter, a Bosnian survivor of rape, and many others,” says BCCC.

Directed by Margo Weishar, this dramatically funny, tender, provocative and political play is a series of interviews with a diverse group of over 200 women, offering new perspectives on the complexities of growing up female and the hurdles women face in overcoming misogynist conceptions of the female body. It features a talented ten-woman cast consisting of: Carol Hartpence, Lauren Kerstetter, Heidi Young Murphy, Maria Jarrell, Shelli Pentimall, Jen Newby, Diana Irvine, Carlene Lawson, Cat Miller, and Shawneen Rowe.

Reserved seating for The Vagina Monologues is $10 for adults and $5 for students, with proceeds benefiting A Women’s Place. Tickets can be purchased online at www.bucks.edu/tickets or at the door.

The Zlock Performing Arts Center is located in the Gateway Center building on the campus at 275 Swamp Rd., Newtown.

The Vagina Monologues is part of the Bucks Live! series of programs from Bucks County Community College’s Cultural Affairs Committee. Forthcoming events include “Sweet Honey in the Rock” February 27, Omar Sosa with Yilian Cañizares and Gustavo Ovalles March 7, and Larry Kirwan’s St. Patrick’s Celtic Crushing Concert March 14.
