PennDOT announced paving and roadway repair will occur at night next week on Interstate 76 – Schuylkill Expressway – in Philadelphia under a $36.8 million project to resurface and repair nearly five miles of the interstate, the associated on-and-off ramps, and more than 20 bridges.
Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:
- Monday, September 30, and Tuesday, October 1, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, the ramp from southbound U.S. 1 to westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) will be closed for paving. Motorists will be directed to use eastbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) and exit at Montgomery Drive to access the ramp to westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway).
- Monday, September 30, and Tuesday, October 1, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, the first ramp from westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) will be closed for paving. Motorists will be directed to continue on westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) and take the second exit to U.S. 1 (City Avenue).
- Monday, September 30, through Thursday, October 3, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, a lane closure will be in place on sections of eastbound and westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between the Girard Avenue and 30th Street Station interchanges for concrete roadway repair.
- Monday, September 30, through Friday, October 4, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, the ramp from westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to Lincoln Drive will be closed for paving. Motorists will be directed to continue on westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway), exit at Belmont Avenue and use the ramp to eastbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to access Lincoln Drive.
- Monday, September 30, through Friday, October 4, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, a lane closure will be in place on sections of eastbound and westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between the Montgomery Drive and U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) interchanges for paving.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
Under this contract, PennDOT’s contractor will mill and overlay I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) pavement from U.S. 1 to I-676 (Vine Street Expressway); perform concrete base, shoulder and barrier repair and replacement as needed; construct minor grade adjustments for existing inlets at select locations; replace damaged signs; install new pavement markings, delineators, and rumble strips; and perform bridge repairs.
